Vine Trust, Edinburgh based charity and member of the Alliance, is excited to announce the launch of the largest building project ever to be undertaken by the organisation and collaborating in-country partners in Tazania.

The Kazunzu Villlage of Hope project will bring together the work of the Jubilee Hope medical vessel on Lake Victoria and building volunteers in the development of a centre of excellence in providing a future, education and training. Constructed on a piece of land to the West of Mwanza, on the shores of Lake Victoria, the village will consist of clusters of individual homes, housing up to six orphans and a ‘mama’ figure, providing a stable environment for them to grow in. Each cluster will share a small ‘shamba’, or cottage garden, to grow crops for their own consumption and the possibility of selling on excess produce they don’t eat.

A vocational training centre will provide hands-on learning opportunities for those in the village and the broader community. Schooling will be provided in the later phases of development for the children living in Kazunzu and the surrounding farms and villages.

Sustainability will be key to the success of the project and we hope to create an array of income opportunities for the villagers. There will be an area set aside for the farming of cash crops and we are exploring the possibility of a series of fish ponds where the villagers can farm Tilapia.

The first phase of construction will focus on building the initial 15 homes as well as the Vocational Training Centre, and addressing some of the infrastructure elements such as water and sanitation.

The project has been launched, in collaboration with in-country partners AICT (African Inland Church of Tanzania) in response to the HIV/AIDS crisis on the islands and shores of Lake Victoria. The health conditions are poor, many fishermen lose their lives on the lake each year and the HIV infection rates can be as high as 30% in some communities. There are also many widows and orphans living on the islands; Kazunzu Village of Hope can offer them a brighter future.
