Sisterland - a new project by Scottish Charity Kids in Action
On this International Women’s Day, Alliance member Kids in Action tell us about a new project they have established in Sierra Leone.
Sisterland is a social enterprise that aims to empower vulnerable women living on the streets of Freetown, Sierra Leone to believe in themselves, grow in confidence and develop the skills needed to improve their lives and the lives of their children.
The first crucial stage of the project is to provide women and children with safe and secure accommodation. A suitable property has been acquired and some improvements are being carried out.
On 21st March 2018, a 40ft container full of donations of furnishings, clothes, household goods, toys and even nappies and toiletries will be shipped out from Aberdeen to Freetown. Property redecoration will be completed by the end of April and by early May the first vulnerable families will move into the home.
But it does not end there. All mothers will be given access to vocational training to enable them to obtain employment. While all children will be given educational opportunities. Mothers will be given support with lifestyle management skills (budgeting skills, healthy eating, first aid, household management).
Residence at the home will be a time limited support project, initially for six months after which, the individual mums and children will be moved into external accommodation and be given ongoing outreach support that will help them move on to independent living.
Sisterland’s vision is to empower vulnerable women to believe in themselves, grow in confidence and develop the skills needed to improve their lives and the lives of their children.
