Scottish Government announces expanded support for local police in Malawi and Zambia

The Scottish Government’s 2019-20 Programme for Government was published on 3rd September 2019.

The previous commitments to climate justice and international development are reiterated and a newly expanded programme is announced to support local police forces in Malawi and Zambia in tackling gender-based violence, improving child protection and supporting vulnerable groups such people with disabilities, LGBTI and people with albinism. Read details on p155-156 here.

This Programme for Government also puts climate action centre stage. We welcome this, even though climate justice arguments for this action could be more explicit - the reality of climate change is felt far more in the global south and the consequences of historical actions in countries like scotland will be felt in poorer countries accross the world for generations to come.

Nonetheless, this Programme for Government shows real leadership on the climate emergency, with genuinely ambitious proposals needed in response to the climate crisis.
