The Alliance launches new Safeguarding Working Group
In our continuing commitment to transforming standards of safeguarding, The Alliance, with the help of its members, is pleased to be launching a new Safeguarding Working Group. The inaugural meeting will take place on 28 August 2019 in Edinburgh and is open to all Alliance members who have a particular interest or expertise in safeguarding.
Safeguarding promotes the safety and welfare of people involved in the delivery or receipt of humanitarian aid and development assistance, protecting them from harm, including all forms of exploitation, abuse and harassment.
The safeguarding working group will seek to provide a space for members to share their experience of fostering safe organisations and building robust safeguarding policies, procedures and practice.
The working group will facilitate conversation about strengthening capacity and practice in safeguarding, embedding an organisational culture where safeguarding incidents are unacceptable and setting out clear procedures for reporting incidents which are understood across organisations.
The discussions will take into account the requirements for the Scottish Government and other funders, the context and legislative environment in Scotland, the evolving UK and global context, and the resources being developed to better equip organisations working to foster safe organisations.
The working group sits alongside a suite of resources developed by The Alliance to help organisations working in international development to uphold the highest safeguarding standards and move beyond compliance.
Support provided to the sector includes a suite of purpose built web resources the ‘Safer for All- Safeguarding Support Package’. The package contains a process template to help organisations develop a safeguarding policy (pdf), definitions and examples of various policies and a research project assessing the capacity of the sector conducted in 2018 (pdf).
Wider safeguarding support to Alliance members includes upcoming Safeguarding Training for Trustees, and previous events have been held about developing better safeguarding policies, providing an introduction to the safeguarding context in Scotland and facilitating Q&A with different policy makers such as the Scottish Government, the Department for International Development and the Scottish charity regulator OSCR.
