Glasgow Centre for International Development (GCID)

What is GCID?
The Glasgow Centre for International Development, also know by its acronym of GCID, is an interdisciplinary research network based at the University of Glasgow. GCID has the remit of:
 Promoting and strengthening an interdisciplinary approach to international development, drawing on expertise available across all four Colleges of the University of Glasgow.
 Supporting capacity building and cultural exchange between low income countries and Scotland through shared collaborative research programmes, the provision of joint research training workshops and short courses, and the delivery of appropriate Master's and PhD degree programmes.
 Developing strong and active collaborative research and development links, not only between Glasgow University and partners in the Global South, but also between partners in the Global South.

What does GCID do?
GCID’s has particular research expertise in the key international development issues and themes of:
 animal health
 development economics
 education and lifelong learning
 environmental management and development
 food security
 human health
 sustainable energy

The value of partnerships
A key principle underlying GCID’s work is our commitment to partnerships of equals with partner institutions in the global south. Examples of such partnerships are those we currently have with Makerere University in
Uganda, the Universities of Dar es Salaam and Dodoma in Tanzania, North-West University in South Africa and the University of Botswana. We see these partnerships as essential mutual support to produce the
highest quality shared research outcomes. In addition, GCID values its partnerships with NGOs, not only those based in Scotland but also NGOs based further afield.

Our aim is to use our strong interdisciplinary approach to make a significant contribution to international development through new partnerships with universities in the Global South; contribution to the UN Millennium Development Goals; linking with the UN and other stakeholders.
