The Alliance Policy Committee

The Alliance Policy Committee

What is the Alliance Policy Committee?

The Alliance Policy Committee is a sub-group of our Board of Trustees. Membership of the committee is made up of a combination of individuals from our Board of Trustees and representatives from our wider membership.

The Committee meets to share policy and advocacy priorities, find ways to collaborate and steer the Alliance's policy work. The Committe also sets proactive policy priorities for the Alliance, approve policy positions and support staff to deal reactively with emerging issues. The group meets a minimum of four times a year, and all previous minutes and notes are avaliable here.

The Committee has Terms of Reference that are regularly reviewed and  agreed by the Board of Trustees.

Who sits on the Policy Committee?

The Committee is open to all Alliance members, but members of the Committee may also invite non-Alliance members for specific purposes.

Currently, there are nine permanent members of the Committee:

  • Simon Anderson (Policy Committee Chair (interim) & Chair of Board)
  • Ben Wilson (SCIAF) (nominated by Geraldine Hill, Board member)
  • Kenneth Watt (Oxfam Scotland) (nominated by Peppy Sparrow, Board member)
  • Chris Pettigrew (IVS) (Nominated by Amy Blake, Board member)
  • Emma Gardner (Christian Aid Scotland)
  • Matthew Lawson (University of Edinburgh)
  • Nick Hepworth (Water Witness International)
  • Hazel MacIver (Tearfund)
  • Benjamin Carey (Carey Tourism)
  • Lewis Ryder-Jones (Secretary)

Can I join the Policy Committe?

Yes. If you work in policy, have specific expertise in a policy area the Alliance works on, or simply a vague interest in international development policy in Scotland, then the work and discussions of this committee are for you. You can become a permanent Committee member (as per Terms of Reference), or you can participate more informally by joining meetings that interest you.

All quartely meeting dates are published on the events page of our website. Quarterly meetings are normally held in February,  May, August & November, and take place in Edinburgh. If you cannot join in person, it is always possible to join online remotely via Zoom. Get in touch for more information.
