Deputy Head of Internal Communications - Department for International Development

Location: East Kilbride, Scotland
Salary: £48,500

About the Organisation

The Department for International Development (DFID) leads the UK’s fight against global poverty, delivering aid to those in need all over the world.
Since 1997, our passionate team has helped more than 250 million people lift themselves from poverty and 40 million more children to attend primary school. But there is still much to do.
We work with national and international partners from two UK headquarters in London and Glasgow (East Kilbride) and a network of offices around the world.
Wherever they’re based, DFID’s employees are united by a single goal: to tackle poverty and improve the lives of people in developing countries.

Job Description

Are you an experienced communicator who can help bring our priorities to life?
The purpose of this job is to engage staff throughout the Department for International Development (DFID) by creating innovative products to engage our global workforce.
Acting as a deputy to the head of the team, this is a key management role in our small but effective Internal Communications team.
The post-holder will be responsible for driving staff engagement across DFID. Based in our joint headquarters in Scotland, they will work across our two UK offices and many overseas posts to bring our Departmental priorities to life.
An established communications expert, they will communicate the implications of the Secretary of State’s new Great Partnership agenda to our staff, announced in her key note speech in April 2018. This vision, and our associated internal change programmes, will see DFID invest more in partnership and collaboration across its work.
This will include explaining how we are improving programme management and corporate affairs across DFID; communicating directly with programme teams and senior leaders to ensure all our staff understand how we can maintain our strong reputation for high standards.
They will also help to engage our overseas offices, working alongside our international team to ensure everyone in DFID understands our key priorities and how to act on them.
DFID Communications Division is part of the Government Communications Service (GCS), which supports the delivery of exceptional public communications. Our communications are innovative, proactive, rigorously planned and evaluated, low cost and digitally-led. We collaborate with the rest of Government on communications priorities and are fully engaged with the Modern Communications Operating Model (MCOM).
You need to be able to show, through your application, that you have the professional skills, breadth of experience and personal qualities for this post. You will be expected to demonstrate specialist core and media competencies as set out in the GCS Competencies framework (Level 4) - which is attached at the bottom of the advert.
