Young Citizen Advocates events

9th June 2017 (all day) - 31st October 2017 (all day)

IDEAS is extending our work in schools to stage a series of major events directly geared towards young people and increasing their participation in local and global change.

From June to October 2017 we’ll be engaging with young people in upper secondary to hear their views on what’s important to them within their schools setting, local community and the wider world, informed by the Sustainable Development Goals.

Our aim is to inspire and encourage young people to take a leading role in issues of interest to them, locally and globally. We also want to support young people to identify what they would like to see and do in their community and the wider world. Lastly, we are aiming to create ‘youth advocates’ to help inform and shape the Year of Young People (YoYP) in 2018.

For now we have four main events planned across Scotland - all of which have been developed together with young people.

On 9 June there will be a major secondary schools event at Dunfermline High School organised by Eco Schools and One World Centre, bringing young people from schools across Fife and Dundee areas together. Workshops will be held by well-known Glasgow Girl Amal Azzudin. A social media poll will decide which 3 of the 6 YoYP themes participants will focus on exploring. The YoYP themes are participation; education; health and wellbeing; equality and discrimination; enterprise and regeneration; and culture.

There will also be three more events over the summer and into October, including one in Aberdeen, and culminating in a three-day residential event at Coatbridge's Conforti Institute, which will bring together young people from all over the country. The idea of the event is that young people should have the skills, knowledge and confidence to act as global citizenship peer educators once they return to their own schools.
