Nelson Mandela Centenary - 18th July - Special Concert

18th July 2018, 19:30 to 21:30

The youth jazz band of Kronendal Music Academy of Hout Bay, near Cape Town will play a concert in Glasgow to mark the Nelson Mandela Centenary.

Kronendal Music Academy was introduced to Alliance member ACTSA by Denis Goldberg, whose home is in Hout Bay and who is an active and committed patron of their project, which is very dear to his heart. It brings together young people from all the three still largely separate race communities in Hout Bay, and has made a huge difference to the lives of many severely disadvantaged children.  Dwyn Griesel,  its Director, visited us in late 2016, and an invitation to Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival resulted from a meeting during that visit.

The jazz band is KMA's showpiece, with players of a high standard. Three play traditional African musical instruments which are blended in with the standard western instruments. More information can be found at

They will be playing at the Jazz Festival Mardi Gras in the Grassmarket on Sat. 14th July and in the Carnival in Princes St. and the Gardens on Sun. 15th. They have a concert planned for the Monday afternoon, and would be pleased to hear from any pubs. or other venues in Edinburgh which would like to have them, especially if these can make a financial contribution or take up a collection.

On Mandela Day, they will be playing in the afternoon in the central hall of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, following the official opening of a small exhibition on the Glasgow/Mandela link and Anti-Apartheid history in the Kelvin Hall across the road.      They move on to London from here, and have an engagement there on the open air stage at the South Bank centre.

The group are funding the trip from their own resources, and would welcome any contributions to help with the local expenses. These can be sent to ACTSA Scotland, and we will pass them on, or can be made online at
