Speaker Profiles

Dr Nick Hepworth is Director of Water Witness International and co-founder of the Alliance for Water Stewardship.  The AWS has worked globally with business, governments, civil society and water users to create the international standard for responsible water use which guides and recognises action towards the water SDGs. Nick will explore: insights generated through use of the AWS standard around the world as a means of cataylsing collaboration between business and communities; and the potential for Scotland and Scottish business to demonstrate global leadership on sustainable development and investment through action on water.

Mark Anderson, Director of the GCU Global Challenges and Sustainable Development Unit, will outline funding opportunities that can support partnerships that might contribute to the SDGs. According to the Better Business Better World report by the Business & Sustainable Development Commission, achieving the Global Goals could open up an estimated US$12 trillion in market opportunities in four economic systems: food and agriculture, cities, energy and materials, and health and well-being. According to experts, they represent around 60 percent of the real economy and are critical to delivering the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, the amazing business opportunities presented by the SDGs are best tapped in to with revitalized and enhanced partnerships between private, public and third sector.
