CPG on Malawi- Scotland Malawi Partnership

22nd November 2018, 18:00 to 20:00

Location: Scottish Parliament, Horse Wynd, Edinburgh, EH8 8BS

This meeting of the Malawi CPG will reflect upon a major conference held in Malawi at the end of September and hear from visiting Malawian Human Rights Defender, Tumeliwa Mphepo on her work with the Association of People with Albinism in Malawi.

As a person with albinism and active Member of the Association, Tumeliwa is an activist working to end discrimination, abuse, abductions and killings of persons with Albinism in Malawi. Tumeliwa is a Scottish Human Rights Defender Fellow, in this, the scheme’s inaugural year. Scottish Human Rights Defender Fellowship is a partnership between the Scottish Government and the University of Dundee, supported by campaign groups Front Line Defenders, Amnesty International, Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund and Beyond Borders Scotland. The Fellowship seeks to provide respite and learning opportunities for Human Rights Defenders and to allow Scottish civil society to learn from them in turn.

We will also hear from David Hope-Jones, SMP who will review the major high-level national conference (held in Lilongwe 28 & 29 September ’18) which celebrated the friendship between our two nations and discussed the next chapter in the bilateral relationship.

This will take place in Committee Room 2, Scottish Parliament from 6-7: 30pm with Malawian G&T's and networking until 8pm.
